BERBICE RIVER CROSSING

 BERBICE RIVER CROSSING

Crossing the Berbice riiver by ferry was an experience which was an adventure all by itself. To catch the first crossing at 4:30 am, traveling from Corriverton, you had to get the first bus at 2:00 am. By car, you could have left at 1:30 am, to join the line, if the car was crossing. This first crossing allowed you to be in Georgetown at about 8:00 am, to get your business done and travel back to Corriverton after lunch.

The first crossing at the New Amsterdam Stelling bustled with activity. Hucksters peddled all sorts of goods, but the food vendors were a hit. Fish and Bread, and Salt Fish and Bake were the favorites, which went well with lemonade, cream soda, or any other drink of your choice.

I liked the return trips. With your business done successfully, you could hang out in leisure at any one of the restaurants, or bar, around the Berbice car park, mindful of the time your car wants to leave on its trip back to Corentyne. Most people who took the first bus, always switched to cars that were waiting at the Rosignal side. The cars from Corentyne stopped at the Berbice car park, after dropping off passengers, and waited for return passengers for the trip back home.

On my return trip, the Rosignal side of the crossing offered good street food, Banks beer, Guinness stout, and liquor of your choice, such as El Dorado bonded reserve. It was a perfect meeting place to meet friends and Corrivertonians who were travelling home. Waiting on the ferry was always pleasantly appreciated by me, even if it was not so for the driver.

In the picture, I am at Rosignal stelling. Also, one of the ferries. The two ferries that made this crossing were Malali and Torani.
