HAPPY INDIGENOUS CELEBRATION

 HAPPY INDIGENOUS CELEBRATION GUYANA

Growing up on the Upper Corentyne in Guyana was filled with many cherished memories of friendship and brotherhood with    INDIGENOUS Guyanese. One of my best friends was Errol, an Arawak of Orealla. He worked as a logger on the upper Corentyne river, and would come out, periodically, to the town of Corriverton, 50 miles away, where I resided, until I migrated. As soon as he landed, he would seek me out to socialize and exchange views and opinions about a variety of issues.

His job was ardous and the money he made easily evaporated because of the expenses he had incurred while working. He owed money to the owner of the logging business, who supplied groceries and other necessities while they were on the job, Most of the time, those charges were ridiculously inflated!

The rest of his money was spent on entertainment, and boarding and lodging, if he didn't want to stay at the free government facility where lodging was free, while he was in town. One night, as soon as he came to town, realizing that he had to save his money, he asked me to accompany him to the bank, where he opened an account.

I lost contact with Errol after he moved to Moruca for more meaningful employment. I was thrilled to see him again In the late 70s when he visited Corriverton. He was married to a beautiful indigennous girl. He introduced me to his wife, Mary, and thier son, Isaac, who came with them.

I know things have changed since the 60's and 70's, with more development,  and meaningful integration, for the INDIGENOUS people of Guyana.

Happy INDIGENOUS celebration during this month of reflection, commitment,  and a show of strength, as the FIRST PEOPLE of Guyana. The INDIGENOUS people of Guyana have a meaningful and significant role to play in Guyana's development, and their communities must be afforded the rights and privileges, like all other Guyanese.
