THE WORLD IS TELLING US SOMETHING

 IS THE WORLD, OUR ROTATING PLANET, TELLING US SOMETHING.

"Happy the man, whose wish and care

A few paternal acres bound,

Content to breathe his native air

In his own personal ground.

Blest, who can unconcernedly find

Hours, days, and years slide soft away

In health of body, peace of mind;

Quiet by day." Alexander Pope.

Pandemics are not new, but Covid-19 is close to us, alarmingly too close to many of us, in so much, that it's terrifying clutches have driven us into compulsory,or, voluntary retreat. A retreat that has forced us to rethink the ways of the world in which we live.

We live in a world of unrestrained desires, restricted only by our inability to achieve more. But this inability is no barrier to us! We have created and manipulated ways and means to break this barrier. Ways and means which have no respect and  acknowledgment of the natural forces that surround us. We have, in all manner of ways, changed the equilibrium of the space in which we live.

Do we need to go back to a simple life? Maybe yes, maybe no! Since the Industrial Revolution we have seen massive improvements in many areas of our socioeconomic and political life. These improvements, however,  have come with an irrational downside. We have an undue exploitation of man by man, unchecked abuses of animals for food and pleasure, an upsurge of artificiality created food, some laced with chemicals, to supply an ever increasing growth in the world's population, deforestation, and a change in lifestyles, and a total disregard for our fellow human beings!

Thse may, or, may not, have contributed to the emergence of Covid-19, We tinker and tamper with the natural order of our existence, in our pursuit for power and control, and, Covid-19 might very well be the result of this, our adventurous journey into the art of mastering the world.

Alexander Pope lived in the late seventeenth, and early eighteenth centuries, and his yearning for a simplistic life may be difficult for the industrialized world in which we now find ourselves, unless the planet earth could open a way for us to return, or, become as closely connected, to his vision.
