SUPER BOWL 55 HALFTIME SHOW
SUPER BOWL 55 HALF TIME SHOW.
NO BOSOMS & BOOTIES
Harry Bissoon
Super Bowl 55 halftime show was legendary, family oriented, lyrically superb and excellently presented by the talented, three times Grammy Awards winner, Weekend, and when the curtains fell, he had spectacularly closed the show with a superb presentation of his hit song, Blinding Lights.
It was far removed from the 'bosoms and booties' performance of super Bowl 54, which was exciting and appealing, but not appropriate for an event that attracts entire families, with kids and teenagers, who sit around big screen TV's, to enjoy the game, and to spend valuable time with the family.
Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, aka Weeknd, is a Canadian of Ethiopian heritage, and has been blazing the R & B musical trail, copping him numerous awards, already making him something of a legend. He is the holder of three Grammys, five American Music Awards, nine Billboard awards, two MTV music awards, nine Juno Awards, the Allan Slaight Award by the Canada Walk of Fame,, and he has been nominated for an Academy Award. He is also the FIRST recording artist to hold three simultaneous spots on the Billboard Hot R & B songs chart.
His show at Super Bowl 55 was like a breath of fresh air. Weeknd's special brand of R & B, with a mixture of pop and contemporary styles, or, alternative R &B, brought back memories of another legend, Michael Jackson. If you are lover of this genre of music, like I do, then you would have really enjoyed the half time show. And when Weekend brought the show to the field, from out of the stands, for his last song, Blinding Lights, his choreography and performance were unstoppable.
It all comes down to the particular, and peculiar, likes and dislikes of each of us, as our appreciation for artistry differs. But moral, family oriented, 'clean' showmanship, outweigh lewd, unfettered and unhindered bacchanalia. Our performing artists, regardless of whatever their style is, are social symbols, and heroes, in society, and can contribute to the enrichment, or degradation, of our youths, and also change the perspective of adults.
It is no wonder, that after the half time show, Weeknd's popularity surged, because here is an artist who has what it takes to become a phenomenal performer of class. I only hope he does not get carried away by the 'bosoms and booties' fans.
