RACING INTO HURRICANE IAN
RACING INTO HURRICANE IAN.

Under the threat of an impending hurricane, from a slow moving storm in the Caribbean Sea, that was heading towards Florida, Esther and I decided to keep an appointment on the West Coast of Florida; one that we didn't want to cancel! So, we made a four-hour drive from West Palm Beach on the East Coast to Tampa, being aware that the storm, later named Hurricane Ian, was heading in that direction!
We got to our destination when Ian was approaching the Western tip of Cuba, with a projected path that was going to take it across Cuba, into the Gulf of Mexico, then up the West Coast of Florida, staying in water, and making landfall in Northern Florida. But all of that changed once it got past Cuba. Ian was going to make a northeastern turn, making landfall in Tampa where we had our appointment!
We stayed in a safe location, away from the high risk Tampa Bay, and waited for Ian to touch down on Tuesday afternoon, or sometime in the evening. But Ian was still uncertain and had other plans!
During the daylight hours of Tuesday, the hurricane slowly shifted its path to the south of Tampa, growing in strength and speed, with ravaging mood swings, and finally settled its aim on the Sarasota- Fort Myers coastline, making landfall later that night, about 100 miles from our hotel.
Surprisingly, we didn't get a lot of rains and wind at our location. The hotel staff stayed in at the hotel on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, providing great service, ensuring that we were all comfortable.
