BE YOURSELF
BE YOURSELF:DON'T ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE PUSHED, OR PULLED, INTO THE CROWD.

It has been frequently argued that there is unity in diversity, and that social assimilation gives credence to this argument. While this explanation is favored by many social scientists, in their pursuit of peace and harmony in multicultural societies, or units, it is difficult to affix this concept to individualism.
I am more in favor of the 'salad bowl' concept to look at individualism in the behavioral patterns of people.
Individuals are not the same. Each of us is unique and have traits that make us different than others. In any circle of friends, we are tossed together, and around, and in the process we tend to lose our identity, and become identified with the identity of that group of people. But we are not the same, and losing our identities only serves to weaken the structure of the unit as a whole. A strong group of friends needs each individual to demonstrate 'individualism', like the different ingredients in a salad bowl. Each ingredient adds its own characteristics to the bowl, and as a result, we get a good and flavorful salad.
In groups of people this 'individualism', unless it is assimilated and becomes unidentifiable in the group, produces disenchantment and trivial, petty differences that could split the group apart.
As I said before, we are, each of us, unique, and we must not allow ourselves to be pulled, or pushed, into a group, where we lose our identity, or go with the flow. In the same way that each one of our fingers has a different structure and fingerprint, but as a whole, they form an effective unit, working together to gain maximum results.
Be yourself! We must understand that individualism is our right, and it must be accepted for what it is. It should not be the reason to create fissures and cracks in a circle of friends, or, for that matter, a family unit.
Step away from the crowd if your individualism is not respected. Stay in the crowd, or salad bowl, and work together, if your individualism is honored. It is our differences that add flavor to a united whole, and if the group of people is worth its salt, or flavor, like a good bowl of salad, then individualism will be the winner.
