IS IT MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING! The Case Of Guyana

IS IT MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING!
The Case Of Guyana

Political systems, and their inherent weaknesses and strengths, are rife for abuses by those who want to interpret, and manipulate them for their own ends! Democratic systems, created eons ago, and institutionalized by the Greeks when they structured the Greek City States, are, presumably, set up with parameters which enable the people to participate in the governance of a nation.

Governance in a multicultural, pluralistic polity, is fraught with societal fissures that can easily present challenges to a well oiled democracy, especially when the power of major competing political parties is dependent on the graces of factions that are largely split on cultural, ethnic, and racial lines.

Many attempts, that are not specifically designed along policy enforcement, have been made to bridge these gaps, in an effort to make democracy work, including policies that are intended to benefit all the people, instead of satisfying people based on the color and shape of the electorate. A few of these countries include South Africa,  Sri Lanka, aok Ind Guyana!

In the case of Guyana, where political power is hinged on a slim margin of victory, minor issues can develop into major, and troublesome, complicated matters which could exacerbate the pluralistic cracks, and swing votes to either side of the political power structure. In multicultural, multiracial pluralism, power, the manifestations of power, and political control of the nation and its resources, for the benefit of its supporters, are foremost in the political race.

The recent disqualification of the youthful, energetic, talented, and aspiring girl calypsonian from region 6 in Guyana, if not tactfully handled, which is doubtful, could spiral out of control, and open up racial cracks which already exist! Cultural talent which is built on its originality and musical genre needs to be developed, instead of being stifled and fashioned in a way that pleases and benefits the power brokers. Calypsonians are social commentators, and their lyrics and delivery are derived from what they see in the social milieu. Attempts to change its path and course, could damage the thin lines that separate democracy from dictatorship, and dismantle the bonds of racial integration.

Another issue now facing the viability of a democratic Guyana, is the GTU strike. It's no secret that Unions have always, from the birth of the nation, played major roles in the quest for political power. Unions have always been controlled by the major political parties, and have contributed to the fall, or, consolidation of their power. Flash back to the recent attempts by third party politicians to break the stranglehold of the union which represented sugar workers, and which was viewed as a political party handmaiden. Reach back further into the volatile birth of the nation, and observe how the governing party was brought down from its pinnacle by the tactful use of union power.

The GTU represents teachers and it is also controlled by political party power! They should be acknowledged as that, and be allowed to bargain for those who they represent. Trying to destroy them could easily backfire! Trying to ridicule those that they represent, and to control those who should strike, can only lead to a breakdown of democracy! Trying to punish those who strike, is an attack on their democratic right, and this respnse should be revisited!

A breakdown of democracy can only lead to shades of dictatorship, and an oil economy that's dictatorial does not bode well for political strength and endurance, which could be disastrous at the upcoming polls
